About our school

Rainbow School is a small international pre-school catering for children from the age of 15 months to 6 years. It was established in Hanoi in 1996 and is famous for its friendly family environment. It offers a challenging and engaging programme based on the English National Curriculum for the Foundation Stage, and aims, above all, to provide opportunities for all children to succeed in an atmosphere of care and of feeling valued.

Classes

Toddler Class for children aged 15 months  - 2 years

Nursery Class for children aged 2 - 3 years

Discovery Class for children aged 3 - 4 years

                    Pre-K Class for children aged 4 - 5 years

Kindergarten for children aged 5 - 6 years

Please note that the cut-off date for each class will be 1st September.  For example, to enter the Discovery Class a child must turn 3 by 1st September.

The teacher/child ratio is low, the groups are small and there is an ex-pat teacher assigned to each class from Discovery to Kindergarten.  In addition to this, each class has a Vietnamese teacher who works alongside the main teacher, and the classes for the younger children also have extra Vietnamese assistants. All the teaching staff are qualified and most have many years' experience in pre-school education.

Facilities

The school has excellent facilities both indoors and outdoors. Each classroom is air-conditioned, bright, spacious and well equipped with plenty of educational, creative and imaginative toys, a wealth of children's books, computers, art and craft materials and different activity corners. The playground offers a wide variety of equipment, including a large and well-maintained sandpit with a climbing frame, a play house, see saws, buckets and spades, diggers and trucks. There are cars and tricycles to ride on,  a castle to play in, a soft shape gym area, bats and balls, hoops, jumping sacks, chalk boards, a volley ball net, plus plenty of space to run around.

Opening hours and holidays

The school follows the same calendar as the United Nations International School of Hanoi and is open Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm. There are also many part-time options for parents to consider (see fees).

Curriculum

The children are divided into their respective classes in the morning where they follow a programme drawn-up by their class teachers. This programme is carefully planned to encompass the 6 key areas of learning as outlined by the English National Curriculum for the Foundation Stage:

Personal, social and emotional development

Communication, language and literacy

Mathematical development

Knowledge and understanding of the world

Physical development

Creative development.

Each weekly plan has a theme and a topic. The activities and play planned for each week aim to encourage progress in every aspect of the child's development.

Lunch

A hot nutritious meal is freshly cooked every day on the premises at an extra charge of US$ 1.5 per meal. The weekly menu is carefully planned to provide a healthy diet for the children.

Afternoon programme

The school's afternoon programme concentrates on the following activities:

Music

Cooking

Body and movement

 Gardening

Science

Language and literacy

Art and craft

 Practical life

Story bag and drama

The children staying for the afternoons also benefit from an optional short sleep or rest; an afternoon snack provided by the school, and an outdoor play time.

In the summer months there is an optional weekly swimming programme.

Bus

The school has a daily mini-bus service (see fees). The bus is air-conditioned, has fitted seat belts and is always supervised by a bus monitor.

Rainbow School in the community

The school has an open-door policy and welcomes active involvement from the parents and the local community. A weekly newsletter provides updates of class activities and coming events. The school opens its doors to the public every Tuesday afternoon (during term time) from 3.00 to 4.30 pm for the Rainbow Playgroup.

Summer programme

A seven-week summer programme runs from late June to early August. It is open to all children aged 18 months to 7 years.
